Ignorance of traffic rules causing havoc in Saran

Chhapra (H.K.Verma): Ignorance and negligence of safe traffic rules while driving on roads have been taking lives of innocent lives in the district.

According to an estimate about 305 persons have lost their lives in 425 road accidents during 2018. The observance of road safety weeks has not been effective in minimising such accidents. The worst victims have been the bikers who have full freedom to ignore the traffic rules. Many of the senior citizens have left walking in the morning hours due to rash driving of two wheelers.

The district administration has identified some black spots on National and state highways of the district which are more prone to road accidents. The public is given some tips regarding safe driving at such places but even then more number of accidents has been recorded.

Jai Prakash Narayan, DTO (District Transport Officer) has claimed organized campaign against the offenders followed by imposing fine on the defaulters. When contacted some people on the condition of anonymity alleged that the motto behind such campaign has not been to reduce the offences but to collect more revenue for the department.

The DTO has also claimed that during Road Safety Weeks people are oriented to follow safe traffic rules also. He has assigned the under mentioned violations of the rules causing road accidents. They are: driving the vehicles at high speed than the speed prescribed, driving by youths below the age of 18 years and without valid Licence, Use of Cell phones while driving, not using seat belt while driving 4 wheelers and helmets while biking, driving in wrong lanes, not using indicator and ignoring the indicators used by others etc.

Saran SP Har Kishore Rai has also accepted that negligence of traffic rules and driving with high speed are the major reasons behind the road accidents but he considers Cell Phone use during driving as more dangerous. About 8 black spots have been identified and the people have been cautioned to drive safely at such places, informed the SP.

However, common people feel that some more stern steps are needed to prevent road accidents like complete ban to use Cell phone with earphone connectivity, wrong side overtaking and many more.
